The CanTeen crew has teamed up with the Sony Foundation Australia to help kick cancer in the pants through a nation-wide fundraiser to help provide age appropriate care for young sufferers.
Since early February, the CanTeen foundation has been collecting unused mobile phones at over 1000 primary schools across Australia, sparking an awareness campaign to let people know that although cancer related statistics are reported as a national figure, cancer sufferers can be as close as someone in your community.
In addition to raising awareness, funds raised through the recycling of these phones will help establish specialised youth cancer centres across Australia, while Sony will reward the primary schools that raise the most money with teaching equipment and educational resources.
Recent statistics reveal that one in 100 Australians under 30 years of age suffer from some form of cancer, and these astonishing figures indicate that there has been little to no improvement in survival outcomes for this age group in the past 25 years.
To date there are no suitable care facilities for Australian youths suffering from cancer.
“Through 25 years of working with young people with cancer, we know their needs are unique. We need cancer services designed specifically for young people to improve outcomes for this group that have stagnated for decades,” explains Dr Andrew Young, chief executive officer of CanTeen.
By recycling your unused mobile phone devices, you could be helping thousands of young Australians who would otherwise have no choice but to enter into the adult healthcare system, which is woefully ill equipped for their needs.

Brisbane Arcade Wedding Open Day – Sunday 6 March 2011
Brisbane Arcade is providing an opportunity for brides and grooms-to-be to sample all on offer for their special day at its inaugural 'Wedding Open Day' on Sunday 6 March from 2pm to 4pm.
The event, to be held over the three levels of the heritage-listed city arcade, promises to be a bridal event with a difference with Tyrrell’s bubbly served on arrival, a display of gowns from the multi award-winning Darb Bridal Couture, a parade of fashion for mother-of-the-bride and guests, dance demonstrations and the chance to win a $1000 Brisbane Arcade shopping voucher.
Brisbane Arcade experts including its renowned jewellers, travel experts, hair and beauty consultants, florists, gift and accessory stores will all be on hand to provide tips and advice and High Tea will be served at popular café and wedding venue, Room with Roses.
Café owner Vicki Pitts says Room with Roses and its adjoining function room ‘The Chandelier Room’ have hosted a number of weddings over the past year, including her own.
“Since holding my own wedding here last year we’ve attracted lots of interest from people looking for a central but intimate wedding venue,” she said.
“The heritage surrounds of the arcade provide a lovely backdrop for photographs and our space lends itself to everything from a High Tea reception to a cocktail event with canapés or a three course meal followed by dancing.
“Guests will be able to see the venue set up for a wedding and sample items from the menu at the open day. We’ll also have our favourite suppliers on hand including a celebrant, DJ, photographer and more,” Vicki said.
Entry to the Wedding Open Day is free however registration is essential. To reserve your place at this exclusive bridal event, email your name and contact details to weddings@brisbanearcade.com.au by 28 February 2011.
Brisbane Arcade runs from the Queen Street Mall through to Adelaide Street and was built in 1923 for Dr James Mayne and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne. The Arcade continues to be operated today in its original form by the Trustees of the siblings’ estate and proceeds from the trust support the University of Queensland Medical School and medical research.
