All the single ladies...

Single this Valentine’s Day and feeling sorry for yourself? Lucy Stephens gets help from psychologist Shannon Strecker for loving your life as a singleton.

Do you tell your friends that Valentine’s Day is nothing more than a vomit-inducing lovefest, when in fact you’re secretly stockpiling the tissues wishing you were loved up? Snap out of it!  Follow these tips and you’ll be busting out the power ballads in no time…

1. Don’t settle, be single
Shannon says, “While no relationship is perfect, being in a relationship that doesn’t meet your needs doesn’t leave you emotionally open to find one that does.”

2. Know where to top up your love tank
Shannon says while romantic relationships offer companionship and support, these needs can be met from a variety of relationships. “Surround yourself with people that meet your emotional needs and bring out the best in you.” Good friends are for life, sometimes partners are not!

3. put down those Twilight books!

“Don’t get caught up in thoughts of the illustrious Mr Right, who, for the record, comes in all shapes and sizes,” she says. “This clouds your view of everything wonderful going on in the here and now – family, friends, career, leisure, life.  Being the spouse is merely one role we can play in life, and in many ways it’s far less exciting then the bachelorette!”

4. No broken-hearted girl
“You can’t sustain happiness 100 percent of the time,” Shannon says.”Holding on to the belief that we should always feel good, only brings us down when we don’t. Don’t resist negative emotions, they are part of life. Just know how to keep things in perspective and seek help if you need it.”

5. Discover your passions
Being single gives you loads of quality “me” time.  “Know what you find satisfying and take steps to experience it every day,” Shannon says. “Shift the spotlight off your weaknesses and focus on what you enjoy and do well.” Time to take up those tennis lessons, girlfriend!
