GREEN GODDESS

Chemical-free beauty and sustainable practices are just the launch pad for Mukti Organic Skincare founder Mukti’s passion for the environment, writes Cassandra Laffey.

Mukti

Suffering a debilitating illness in 1987 was the catalyst for single-monikered Mukti to research natural medicine and ingredients. With a background in aromatherapy, naturopathy and beauty therapy, she decided to try her hand at creating suitable products, and after studying cosmetic chemistry along the way, her eponymous range of skincare launched in 2000.

“The name means freedom and liberation in Sanskrit and in Hindi it means rebirth so I gave myself that name I was going through fairly major transitions in my life,” Mukti explains. “It was important to me to embrace those principles and to work towards that.”

Mukti Organic Skincare is unique among natural and organic skincare brands in that Mukti is involved in formulating each product from concept to packaging. Created on a small production scale in Maleny, the label was certified organic in 2006 and now includes 30 products with a new anti-ageing range incorporating a certified organic base with peptide technology launching early this year.

“My first area of research was to find something with a clean base but still using scientifically proven ingredients which are going to have that physiological effect on skin that people want,” Mukti says. “It’s going to have the same topical effect in regard to injectables so for women who don’t want to use Botox or put hyaluronic fillers in their skin, this is an alternative to that.”

Mukti continues to tweak her core range, adding key ingredients for added skin benefits such as Kakadu plum and pomegranate and researching new buzz extracts like papaya and tamanu.. Her favourite product is Antioxidant Facial Oil, which she confesses to using religiously at night.

As articulate about sustainable agriculture as she is discussing Australian native ingredients Mukti says her greatest passion is education and creating consumer awareness.

“I’d probably term myself as more of an eco-activist right now and the products are maybe just a tool in order to get that message out there and educate people a bit more,” “It’s a whole system and we are a part of that system and we have a responsibility to play out that role in the most conscientious and conscious way that we can.”
